The sequel to “Avatar” is genuine, and it’s here-skeptics be damned.
Director James Cameron is now ready to show moviegoers his otherworldly, underwater vision for “Avatar’s” long-awaited sequel after at least seven delays in the last eight years (the picture was initially scheduled to be released in 2014). “Avatar: The Way of Water” is the new title.
At CinemaCon, the annual conference of movie theater owners presently taking place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Disney, which acquired the brand after acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019, presented new footage of the highly awaited film.
Attendees at CinemaCon were given 3D glasses to wear while watching the minute-long video, which had almost no speech.
Instead, sweeping graphics of the planet’s sparkling blue oceans and lakes immersed exhibitors in different places around the beautiful world of Pandora.
The movie also shows the local Na’vi tribe interacting with diverse wildlife such as whales and pelicans, some of which flew right through the screen and into the faces of audience members thanks to the three-dimensional technology.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” begins more than a decade after the events of the first film, and tells the story of the Sully family — Jake, Neytiri, and their children — and the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they face.
“I know one thing,” Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, tells Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana. “This family is our fortress everywhere we go.”
The trailer will premiere exclusively in theaters on May 6, just in time for Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Cameron, who is still in New Zealand finishing up “Avatar 2,” appeared in a pre-recorded video to introduce the film to attendees.
He claims it was “made for the biggest screen and the most immersive 3D available,” and that he “went out to push the boundaries of what film can achieve.”
Producer Jon Landau, who arrived in town in less than 24 hours from New Zealand, said the four sequels will revolve around “family.” Each sequel will be treated as a stand-alone film with its own plot and climax.
“We need to make sure [audiences] get an experience that they can’t get anywhere else,” Landau added.
Along with Cameron, Worthington, and Saldana, Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder, and Stephen Lang return in the $250 million “Avatar 2.” Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Cliff Curtis, and Jemaine Clement will be among the newcomers to the franchise.
It’s natural to be concerned that interest in all things “Avatar” has waned in the decade since the film’s historic theatrical release. However, the Navi nation looks like it will be faithful.
During the epidemic, Cameron’s pioneering sci-fi epic recovered the record of highest-grossing film in history, grossing $2.802 billion worldwide, retaking the title from “Avengers: Endgame.” Disney plans to re-release “Avatar” in theaters on Sept. 23 in anticipation of “The Way of Water.”
avatar 2 release date,
“Avatar” was released in December 2009, at a time when ticket prices were much lower than they are now. The film, on the other hand, had an unrivaled run in theaters, playing for nearly ten months, thanks to repeat viewings and VIP screenings.
The unprecedented success of “Avatar” prompted theater owners to accelerate the adoption of digital cinema technology so that their venues could screen 3D films.
Cameron has turned to new technology once again for the sequel, this time to shoot sequences underwater.
That means Disney must persuade the throngs of film distributors in attendance at CinemaCon that “Avatar 2” will push cinematic limits to such an extent that the costly technology upgrades required to match Cameron’s stunning vision will be worthwhile.
Exhibitors may not need much convincing to go all out for “The Way of Water,” based on the audible gasps in the room.
The sequels to “Avatar 2” will be released on December 16, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
